Todays quotation is from Crimson Angel by Barbara Hambly.

You never, ever, let anyone in authority know you knew what they were talking about until you knew which way the wind blew…

Busy thinking about themselves

Todays quotation is from The Murder Road  by Stephen Booth.

“He was concerned about what people would think of him,” said Cooper.

“Well, that´s stupid, isn´t it?”

“Why?”

“There´s no point in worrying about what other people will think about you, ” said Fry. “If you believe your life has been ruined because you never became wealthy and successful, never achieved your dreams, never became a great footballer or whatever, that´s all within yourself. It´s just you, creating your own pain. The reality is, most people don´t think about you at all. They´re too busy thinking about themselves.”

The whole picture

Todays quotation is from The Murder Road  by Stephen Booth.

It was strange how you could live in a place all your life and see only the things that were relevant to you on a day-to-day basis, without seeing the whole picture. For Grant Swindells this was just a railway embankment dividing his fields from someone else´s. He only ever saw the bridge from underneath as he was driving through it.

Hypocrisy

Todays quotation is from Leviathan Wakes by James S. A. Corey.

” No, I mean it. A lot of people claim to believe in things. ‘Family is most important,’ but they screw a fifty-dollar hooker on payday. ‘Country first,’ but they cheat on their taxes. Not you, though. You say everyone should know everything, and by God, you put your money where your mouth is.”

Not seeing

Todays quotation is from Ancillary Sword by Ann Leckie.

“…That if it was ever really bad, surely Station would say something. To you, of all people. And it’s so easy to just go along. So easy not to see what’s happening. And the longer you don’t see it, the harder it becomes to see it, because then you have to admit that you ignored it all that time. …”

Outward signs

Todays quotation is from Ancillary Sword by Ann Leckie.

“It’s always for show, Citizen. It is entirely possible to grieve with no outward sign. These things are meant to let others know about it.”

Wondering

Todays quotation is from The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers.

‘Yes, it is. Feelings are relative. And at the root, they´re all the same, even if they grow from different experiences and exist on different scales.’ He examined her face. She looked sceptical. ‘Sissix would understand this. You Humans really do cripple yourselves with your belief that you all think in unique ways.’ He leaned forward. ‘Your father – the person who raised you, who thaught you how the world works – did something unspeakably horrible. And not only did he take part in it, he justified it to himself. When you first learned of what your father had done, did you believe it?’

‘No.’

‘Why not?’

‘I didn´t think he was capable of it.’

‘Why not? He obviously was.’

‘He didn´t seem like he was. The father I knew never could´ve done such a thing.’

‘Aha. But he did. So then you begin wondering how you could´ve been so wrong about him. You start going back through your memories, looking for signs. You begin questioning everything you know, even the good things. You wonder how much of it was a lie. And worst of all, since he had a heavy hand in making you who you are, you begin wondering what you yourself are capable of.’

Mistakes mean progress

Todays quotation is from The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers.

Mas laughed. ‘Pairs are not inventors. They are too unfocused, too short-lived. Good for Navigating and discussing theories, but bad at building. Building takes many, many mistakes. Pairs do not like mistakes. They like staring out windows. But Solitary like mistakes. Mistakes mean progress. We make good things. Great things.’

Who won?

Todays quotation is from A Dangerous Place by Jacqueline Winspear.

“Aircraft such as those have only one purpose, and that is to cause damage – to wage war. In any game there is a winner and a loser, and the purpose of those planes is to increase the chances of winning. But in war there are no real winners – too many lives are lost, too much pain to endure. How can we look back at any war and say, ‘We won’?”
